San Diego’s Best Plumbing Company | Tips and Tricks For Clogged Drains

Although many drain cleaners advertise that they will help to unclog your drains fast, the harsh reality is that they will actually create more costly damage that will require much more work. Corrosion is very real, and the best way to make sure you clean the drain properly is to hire a professional, but if you can’t, than try some of these helpful tips to repair the damage as effectively as possible.

Step 1.
This method requires just a plunger, and a lot of patience. The first step is to take the plunger and completely cover the drain with the cup. You need to make sure that all of the outlets in the sink are plugged up with rags. Hold the plunger upright and plunge vigorously 6-10 times with as many strokes as needed. If that doesn’t work move on to step 2.

Step 2.

For this step you will need baking soda and vinegar, and no we are not building a volcano. Pour .5 of a cup of baking soda down the drain, and then follow with .5 of a cup of vinegar. The acidic reaction should occur, and after a few moments follow with hot water. You may see stuff coming up, but that is not a cause of concern it’s just a natural reaction.

Step 3.
Pour 1 cup of baking soda and ½ cup of salt down the drain. Let is sit overnight and then pour boiling water down the drain. This should loosen up anything that is causing a clog.

Step 4.

If steps 1-3 do not work use this as a last resort. Take a metal hanger wire and unbend it to try and snake the drain and pull things out. Take precaution with this, as you do not want to get this jammed in there, or to damage the blades in the disposal.

Cleaning Sewage-The Dangers of Sewage

The sewer backed up, and the damage is on the floor. You must examine whether or not it is a good idea to clean up the mess by yourself.

The run down….don’t even think about it. The average person lacks the equimpent, training, and knowledge to do an effective job at repair. Sewage has many nasty things, where you need proper gear. In the event of a spill….don’t waste a moment, call you local plumber ASAP.

Don’t go near sewage

Don’t even go near the area where the backup occurred. Water that comes out of the sewage system is beyond dangerous, known as blackwater (also known as category 3) can contain toxigenic and pathogenic compounds that could cause harm to both you and your familys.

Sewer water is potent in viruses

The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) states that there are over 120 viruses that can be found in feces and urine alone. This is a tiny faction of the virus found in sewage, including virus such as…

  • Rotavirus – Life threatening stomach virus in children
  • Adenoviruses – respiratory and eye issues
  • Norovirus – can cause stomach flu like issues
  • Giardia and Cryptosporidium –a cause of chronic intestinal disease in both adults and children
  • Salmonella, Shigella and Escherichia coli – Air restriction and respiratory problems

You can’t treat sewage with only bleach

Unlike other bacteria issues, the solution for sewage isn’t to just bleach it. The bleach can do a great job with the superficial aspects of cleaning, however it does not help with killing the bacteria. These are not the common household germs that bleach is known for killing, no, they are way more dangerous and will require professional intervention. Actually , we have been called in on cases where the original cleanup was done with a heavy dosage of bleach and we still found high levels of contamination throughout the treated area. Bleach will not do the trick, only a professional help will.

Issues that Can Shorten Your Pipes Life Span

Plumbing pipes are designed with the intention of lasting a long time, hopefully saving you money and headache. However, life happens, and a variety of different factors can lead to the need of early pipe replacement. If you want to keep your pipes in the best condition possible, it is important to stay informed on all potential issues. Below are some of the things that can lead to pipe replacement, and all the things you can do about it.

Nowadays the most common agent for pipes is copper, due to the fact that it does a great job protecting against rust. Although it does not rust easily, it still is just as susceptible to corrosion as many other metals..Chlorine in the air reacts poorly to the metals, so it begins to eat away at the pipes over time. When chlorine causes it, it is called pitted corrosion, and corrosion in general often times leads to very expensive and timely pipe replacements, that could have easily been avoided through regular checks and proper materials. Avoid using drain cleaners, as these only worsen the issue.

Limescale is a form of mineral buildup, which is the result of water pumping through the pipes over long periods of time. Because water flow is restricted, the pipes tend to run much less efficiently than before. If you do not have it checked, and it isn’t fixed soon, the limescale will harden, and will ruin your pipes, needing them to be removed. Now your only option would be to remove and replace the pipe, which could be a costly and again timely process.

The best way to deal with these issues is to contact your local plumber and have your pipes checked regularly. A video inspection will surely pick up all the issues that need fixing, and will help identify what you can do to have your pipes running for decades to come.

The Dangers of Store Bought Drain Cleaners

Often times when there is clog in the sink, the first thought to come to mind is to go to the store and buy a drain cleaner. That is, in our opinion, a terrible idea. Although it is very easy, it is actually really bad for the drain, and can do more harm than good. Read on to find out more about store bought drainers, and the danger they possess to the sink.

The Problem

Most drain cleaners cause the breakdown of pipes, which leads to corrosion, and will eat away at the pipes.. Although this is great in the short term, it does much more harm than good.Years of using these will lead to many issues with your pipes over time, causing them to fail more often and require replacement earlier. Also, the store bought drain cleaners don’t actually eat away as much as you think. Waste is often still present in the pipes causing more damage over time.

The Pros

Professional plumbers are far too familiar of the issues with corrosive drain cleaners, which is why they don’t use them. Instead, they use a few different procedures that don’t damage the pipes. The first is drain snaking, which involves the use of an auger on a long cord, which drill through the clog. The second method is hydro jetting, which is when we fire a high-pressure stream of water down the pipe to blast all accumulated waste off of the walls. Both tactics clean out the drain remarkably well, and keep the pipe in great condition.

It is important to check your pipes often to make sure there is no damage in the future. If you have any questions make sure to always call us today. Resurrection Plumbing is San Diego’s best plumber, with fair prices and great work quality.

The Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposal, the seemingly unstoppable system, capable of draining down anything from coffee grinds to a atomic bomb. However with your daily treatment of the disposal you may actually be damaging it, which you may be frequently and engaging in, without so much as a second thought. If you want to maximize your disposals lifespan, there are certain things you should avoid exposing it to. Here are some ways to make the most out of your disposal.

Fat Oil and Grease

Fat, Oils and Grease, better known as FOG. These are all some common daily materials used in cooking, that are often mindlessly poured down the drain when they’re done being used. The problem with that is that these materials coagulate when they cool down, becoming viscous and sticky. These materials tend to stick to the walls of the disposal and to the blades. This can restrain the system from normal operating functionality. These also restrict the flow of water from the drain pipe to the sewer, which is another reason to avoid pouring it down the drain.

Hard Materials

The impellers in the garbage disposal are not the sharpest tools in the tool shed, and often get rid of waste by simply bashing it into smaller and smaller pieces. However, the impellers can only take so much damage before they begin to break. Bones, fruit, ice, and more can cause the impellers to break off. Although the whole system won’t break, you will need to fix the broken impeller. The best way to avoid damage to the disposal in the first place, is simply don’t put these things in the disposal in the first place.

If your disposal isn’t running well, or seems to not be working, give us a call, and we will come out and make sure everything is up to speed. Resurrection Plumbing is San Diego’s best 24/7 Plumber.

Why Video Pipe Inspection

Why to do Video Pipe Inspection

Often times the most problematic issue with plumbing, is the ability to recognize that you have a problem to deal with in the first place. Plumbing problems are often quite subtle and can only be seen by examining the pipe. This is difficult since the majority of the plumbing system is hidden in the floor, and it is quite tedious and costly to go through the floors. By the time you realize you have a problem, often times it is already way too late, and the damage is done. The only safe and reliable way to examine the pipes, and see if you have any damage is to physically go inside of them with a video pipe inspector.

Video pipe inspection is essentially taking a long chord and putting it through the pipe system, with a camera attached to the head. The camera goes through the system, and feeds back information and footage to the plumber. This method allows your plumber to find problems that need repair without having to tear up the floorboard and risk damaging the pipe.

We highly recommend that you schedule annual pipe inspection, in order to make sure that all of your pipes stay in good shape, and you avoid having damaged pipes later.  In doing this the plumber should be able to get a better grasp on your pipes and hopefully help to avoid future damage. Although it is likely that you will need repairs, you will saves thousands of dollars just by getting your pipes examined yearly, or bi yearly even, and avoid time consuming damage that will inconvenience both you and your family.

We highly recommend that you consider video pipe inspection, and contact us at Resurrection Plumbing for more information. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
